COURSE INFORMATION

Effective communication skills are vital for ensuring a positive patient experience in radiology departments. When patients enter a radiology department, they have a variety of expectations and needs centered around their comfort, understanding of the procedure, and the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the care they receive. Undergoing an imaging examination can be a source of anxiety, whether for first-time patients or those with chronic conditions requiring regular follow-up. This course aims to highlight patients' expectations and to demonstrate the essential role of every health professional, including radiographers and radiologists, in effective patient communication.

Emphasis will be placed on the importance of professionals providing clear explanations of the procedure and how to prepare for it. Additionally, the course will illustrate the need for radiologists to deliver step-by-step information, especially when conveying unexpected findings or delivering bad news. Finally, the course will reaffirm the necessity of ensuring that patients are guided through the appropriate care pathways.

This course has been developed in collaboration with the ESR Patient Advisory Group.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After watching the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the stress, anxiety, and vulnerability patients may experience before and during imaging procedures, and apply strategies to minimize physical discomfort and emotional distress.

  • Demonstrate clear, compassionate, and effective communication—both verbal and non-verbal—when explaining imaging procedures and supporting patients throughout the process.

  • Communicate imaging results with clarity, sensitivity, and respect for privacy, using a structured approach when delivering unexpected or difficult news.

  • Ensure patient understanding and engagement by providing clear explanations of procedures, preparation requirements, and follow-up steps, and by confirming comprehension in the patient’s own words.
