ESOR Special Focus Series - Patient Communication in Radiology
In radiology and radiography, the need for education in communication with patients and referrers is becoming increasingly important. Effective patient communication is essential for radiologists and radiographers as it enhances the patient’s comfort, trust, and cooperation, which are crucial for accurate diagnostics and successful treatment outcomes. Clear communication helps reduce patient anxiety, ensures adherence to pre- and post-procedural instructions, and minimises the need for repeated scans, thereby improving overall workflow efficiency and patient safety.
Moreover, patients are becoming more involved in their care and treatment pathways, seeking informed conversations that enable shared decision-making. Direct communication with patients is becoming more common, necessitating skills in delivering complex information in a compassionate and comprehensible manner. This course is dedicated to highlight and discuss these aspects, which will enhance radiologists’ and radiographers’ ability to bridge the gap between technical expertise and patient-centred care, ultimately improving the overall quality of healthcare delivery.
This course has been developed in collaboration with the ESR Patient Advisory Group.
After watching the webinar, participants will be able to:
Understand the crucial role of effective communication in patient care and the impact it has before, during, and after imaging examinations.
Apply a range of communication approaches and techniques to support patient understanding, comfort, and trust throughout their healthcare journey.
Demonstrate key skills that enhance collaboration and communication between radiographers, patients, and referring physicians — including clear, structured reporting and appropriate delivery of critical or unexpected findings.
Identify opportunities for ongoing education, training, and use of practical tools to further develop and sustain effective communication skills in radiographic practice.
