Research is an integral part of our radiological practice. Whether you’re conducting your own studies or implementing research findings in your daily clinical routine, it is important to know about the fundamentals of radiological research. This new season of the Fundamentals of Radiological Research Course addresses current hot topics in the clinical and research arena: value-based medicine, biomarkers and artificial intelligence. Each session is led by luminaries in the field and includes ample time for questions from the audience. The course will conclude with two Open Forum Sessions at ECR 2025.

Imaging biomarkers

With the advent of quantitative image analysis and acquisition, imaging biomarkers are being increasingly investigated and introduced into clinical practice. However, not all so-called imaging biomarkers are actual biomarkers, which has important implications for their use. In this session the definition of a biomarker and the process of biomarker discovery and development are discussed.

Learning objectives:

  • To understand what constitutes a biomarker.
  • To learn how to investigate and develop an imaging biomarker.
